Magu - a short introduction

When you leave the big, beautiful and very developed capital Kigali towards the east, the main road leads you through banana plantations and fields. You start driving through the green and very beautiful

„country of a thousand hills“. But it doesn‘t take long to reach Magu. After around 30 minutes you leave the mainroad and contiue on a non-asphalted road. On the sides you see little shops, small businesses, marketplaces. The road is filled with people walking or on bicycles. After another 15 minutes on this bumpy road, you finally reach Magu. It is a village that is spread over a hill with around 1000 inhabitants.

The community here doesn‘t have electricity, nor running water. So it is mostly the children‘s task to fetch water for the family. Most of the people earn their living by cultivating their fields around Magu. The day

starts at 6am with the sunrise and kind of ends at 6pm with the sunset, since it is then dark.

Most of the children only go to primary school for six years, since they have to pass a national exam

to go to secondary school and many don‘t pass this exam for the education in villages in public schools is not good. So these kids don‘t have much perspective for their lifes when it comes to education.

The Center of the village is the church and a primary school, which are next to each other. And thats exactly where we also have bought the property to build the community center. It‘s our goal to work with those two

institutions together.

The community is absolutely excited and supportive about the community center. Already in 2019 we had the chance to get to know many people a bit better, since Jannik did a research for his bachelor thesis in Magu. And Vital for sure knows many people since he grew up there.

And they were so happy to see Jannik and Vital again in July 2021. And we can't wait to work together with them and see people reaching their full potential.
